The Flu Hits!
I’ve spent this week in bed. After picking up the flu last Saturday night, I have felt miserable. Simply terrible. Fever. Sore throat. Consistent cough. And, worst of all, overwhelming fatique. Surprisingly I’ve had very little appetite. I need to consciously decide to eat. On Sunday, I tried to make some “comfort” food that sounded good. But, it was such an effort to pull together a meal that I gave up and gathered some food from the freezer. Day after day I know I have to eat to keep my energy up…but I barely have enough energy to get from the bedroom to the kitchen. And yet, I have very little to complain about when I start considering that I will be living in Lesotho for 2 weeks in November.
- I have food in a refrigerator and freezer. In Lesotho only 7 percent of households have access to electricity.
- I take for granted the number of boxes of cereal that I have in the pantry. Entire households in Lesotho eat on less than $1 a day. $1 a day!
- I have the convenience of warm running water for a shower and a toilet close by. 12% of Lesotho has access to running water. Many women line up early in the morning to collect water for the day.
- I have excellent medical care and medicine when I need it. Except for this week, I feel pretty healthy. In Lesotho, over 1/3 of the adult population has AIDS.
- I enjoy interacting with my friends’ children, but have few responsibilities with them. If I lived in Lesotho, I would most likely be taking care of the children of friends or neighbors. Nearly 1 of 3 children live as orphans.
I’ve been doing my fair amount of complaining about the flu. But, in all reality, I have nothing to complain about. I will get well. I will visit Lesotho in 2 weeks. And I will do all that I can do to raise awareness of the tremendous needs in Lesotho.
Remember, I, we, can make a difference for God’s Kingdom by sharing His love and His resources with one life at a time. I’m adding some pictures at the bottom to give you a few more faces of the ones we’ve come to love in Lesotho.
