In AD 66 Masada was used by Jews, who were fleeing Roman persecution, as a refuge. However, three years later when Rome penetrated Masada thousands of Jews
chose to commit suicide rather than be subjected to Roman rule. After capturing Masada, the Romans constructed a wall that was six feet thick and seven miles long, to prevent the
Jews from escaping.
Every year the rebels' resistance at Masada is commemorated by the Israel Armor Corps. Each year recruits cry "Masada shall not fall again"
