Herod Antipas found Tiberias in about 20 A.D. It is named after the emperor, Tiberius
Caesar. Because the city was said to have been built over a graveyard the Jews declared it to be unclean and would not enter it. Tiberias is only mentioned once in
the New Testament in John 6:23.
