Be Of The Same Mind With One Another

By

  • Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. (Romans 12:16)
  • I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.  (1 Corinthians 1:10 )
  • Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. (1 Thessalonians 5:13)
  • Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. (1 Peter 3:8)

The word “harmony” in 1 Peter 3:8 is literally to be “of one mind” or “likeminded.” The actions of being sympathetic, compassionate, and humble all stem from having one mind. Or better said, thinking with the mind of Christ.

Having the same mind means knowing and understanding Scripture. From the Word of God we receive the infusion of God’s thoughts. Then, in faith we need to apply His Word as the Spirit shows us. Being of the same mind with one another is embracing the same kind of viewpoint or attitudes toward life and one another. We need to have the mind of Christ. . .to think with His values. . .to possess His vision. . .and to allow Him to change our attitudes which in turn will change our actions toward one another.

Knowing God

Do you have a lot of knowledge about God but not much of a love relationship with Him? Has your head knowledge reached you heart so that it affects how you live? Where are you looking for your knowledge of God? to a radio personality? a pastor? a friend? a self-help book? How about trying the real thing. . . God! Go to His Word and You will find the Person, not just the doctrine.

Reaching to the Ends of the World

Many of you indicated that you use the material from Anchor Your Life for Bible studies, small group studies, choir devotionals, church bulletins. . . even sermons! You’ve used the content at Christian coffee houses, in jail ministries, for Youth groups, for dorm floor devotions. But, perhaps the most creative use of the devotionals came from a woman who selects specific messages, makes a dozen copies on colorful paper, places them in her desk drawer at work and gives them to everyone who visits her – the postman, the paper boy, the cleaner, the plant keeper. All I can say is keep on keepin on with sharing God’s Word with those around you!

Lastly, I appreciated some special comments that a few of you made – It “is so nice to know that there are actual people behind this email and not just a micro chip programmed to pump out the data each day.” Another reader wrote, “In this rat race and high technology world we live in, it is good to know that there are people out there like you that use it to give God honor and glory.”

We will keep proclaiming God’s Word on the Internet. . . you keep sharing it with others!

Satisfied With Your Lot?

“Contentment is not complacency, nor is it a false peace based on ignorance. Contentment is not escape from the battle, but rather an abiding peace and confidence in the midst of the battle.” (Warren Wiersbe)

Contentment is being satisfied with one’s lot. It’s an attitude that lets us be satisfied with whatever is available. . . with whatever situation we are in. . . with whoever is our “sand-paper” person (those that rub us the wrong way!). . . with wherever we live. . . with whatever we own . . . with whatever battle we are going through.

Are you satisfied with “your lot”? If not, go to God. . . for He supplies us with all that we need!

The Worry Solution

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NAS) Philippians 4:6-7

What do you worry about? Do you dwell on the unforeseen? Do you worry about imaginary events that never happen? Do you worry over people or matters which you have no control over? Do you worry when you have nothing to worry about?

Which do you spend more time doing, worrying or praying? The Bible tells us, don’t worry about anything. . . but pray about everything!

The next time that you find yourself a worried mess, get alone with God. Begin by praising Him for who He is and then unload your heart. God will not be surprised by what you tell Him, He already knows all about it! But, after you’ve made your requests known to Him, don’t miss out on expressing your appreciation to Him. Thank Him for all He’s done for you. . . and all that He will do for you. . . “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” What an incredible promise: God’s peace will stand guard over your heart and mind! Notice that it doesn’t say that your problems will go away, but, that you will experience a peace, a quiet confidence, regardless of what is going on around you. I don’t know about you, but I find it’s a great trade-off, I get rid of worry and in return receive peace from God. Which will you choose?

The Latest and the Greatest

I love having the newest technology. I confess I fall prey to the promises from the latest and greatest gadgets on the market. I guess I justify it because of having an Internet ministry. Needless to say, an ad for a new device recently caught my attention.

The bait was cast and I was hooked. Would this new gadget allow me to do more, faster? More emails. More text messages. More Internet connections to remote parts of the world. More efficiency was promised. Could that mean more ministry? Or would it mean more enslavement to technology?

It’s easy to buy into the empty promises of our world. Paul understood our struggles. In Philippians 3:8 he wrote: “What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (NIV). Paul understood what was important, his relationship with Christ.

I hope that I always pursue my relationship with God more fervently than my pursuit of the latest technology. How about you? What’s your pursuit?

A prayer to pray: Lord, renew my passion to know You better. I want a deeper relationship with You today than what I had yesterday. May I finish the day knowing that I have stayed in step with Your Spirit. I don’t want to know You in a superficial way…I want to love You personally, passionately, and devotedly.

Determined Devotion and Direction

What is your passion? What do you get excited over? Stimulates your thinking? Monopolizes your thoughts? your time?

What is your life’s pursuit? What makes life worth getting up in the morning? When you talk about your passion your eyes glow and your enthusiasm is contagious.

What’s your passion? Is it cooking? fishing? boating? golf? tennis? travelling? cleaning? exercising? fixing up your house? your yard? making money? getting ahead of others? reaching your goals? TV? music? surfing the Internet?

What about God? When you talk about Him do your eyes glow? Is your enthusiasm for God contagious?

Knowing Christ

The key to living a life pleasing to the Lord is to develop a more intimate relationship with Him. It is through daily communion with God that the union is strengthened.  There are no shortcuts in the process of growth. There are no “how to” books on arriving at holiness.  Time must be taken to develop a closer relationship with God. In order to live a life worthy of God’s calling, it is essential to grow in the knowledge of who God is and what He has accomplished through the cross, and then apply the scriptural truths to one’s life.

Is your faith stronger today than it was yesterday? a week ago? a year ago? When do you take the time to develop your relationship with God? Do you regularly set aside time to read His Word? spend time in prayer? If you’re not seeking God today, when will you start? Why not spend some time with God right now?
