They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them, but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. (NIV) Psalm 106:34-35
Before the Israelites went into the Promised Land, God gave them the game plan. . . even though their enemies were powerful and many in number, He would give the Israelites victory after victory. And after they had defeated the opposing armies, God commanded them: “. . .then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods, and the LORD’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.” (Deuteronomy 7:2-4 NIV) God knew that if the Israelites mingled with the people they would adopt their customs, lifestyles, and eventually, adopt their religion.
We face the same challenge today. The world’s ways are attractive to our human natures. And although we are to live in the world, we are not to adopt the ways of the world. The more we adopt the world’s ways, the further we stray from God.
How have the ways of the world been integrated into your life? How have the priorities of society caused you to shift your attention away from God? What desires have caused you to compromise in your faith? Will you choose to renounce and destroy the thoughts, words, and actions of the world and seek to wholeheartedly follow God?
