Great Day in Mafeteng

We had a great day today in Mafeteng, a village in the foothills where we began a ministry during the last visit to Lesotho. We started the day early and travelled 2 hours. We went through the lowlands enjoying the beautiful landscape.

We were greeted by the women of the village followed by a steady stream of children. When the bubbles came out, I think the women enjoyed it the most. I got a real kick out of watching adult women chase after bubbles trying to catch them. Adults becoming children and forgetting the cares of the world for a short while!

The neediest children received shoes and blankets. Others received clothing that was donated from Sarasota. Families received seeds for gardens from Hope Seeds (Bradenton, FL). But, the most treasured gifts were the Sesotho Bibles. Some traded their seeds for a Bible. What a joy it is to see such hunger for the Word of God!

Never Too Far Away

As for how we spend our time after a long day…well, we’re never too far away from laptops. Everyone has been great with pitching in to get pictures ready…deleting, sorting, editing, and printing. The people love having copies of their own picture. So we are working hard to get pictures to the children…resize pictures for the blog…and facebook photos uploaded. We should have more up tomorrow.

School Visit

One of my favorite visits while we’re in Lesotho is to a primary school. The school in a poor village in Maseru. It’s the same school that we have visited since 2007.

Here are my thoughts from the last trip to the school…

Helping the needyUpon our arrival in the car we were swarmed by it seemed like 100’s of children. I think I now know what it’s like to be a celebrity! The children were all chanting and screaming they were so excited to see us.

We were told that they remembered us from previous years.

The distribution of clothing and other items went very smoothly. Emily and Julia, our friends from Ackerman’s store, along with Me’ Rose, helped us shop and coordinated the day.

Helping the childrenI’m guessing that 300 plus children gathered in the church (can you imagine a church on public school property in the US?!?) along with their teachers,

the principal, the chief of the village and the Lesotho TV station film crew.

Julia did an invocation and introduction in Sesotho before having me (Mike) speak as well as pray for the children. Everyone of them knew we were there to share the love of Christ in tangible ways.

Then 1 by 1 beginning with the youngest, the children came up to receive their shoes, clothes, etc. You couldn’t believe their faces…smiles everywhere! They immediately put their new treasures on.

The needs are so great…we are praying that by touching lives individually that 1 by 1 we will point them to Jesus.

I can’t wait to see the kids this year’s 2010 visit to Lesotho!

Lesotho Shoe Challenge!

Lesotho Shoe ChallengeI know that needs abound around us…but, I am challenging you, the Thought for the Day readers, our website visitors, and Facebook friends to a Lesotho Shoe Challenge!

Lesotho is a small country surrounded by South Africa that has been ravaged by poverty and AIDS.

I leave April 14. As of today funds for 235 pairs of shoes have been donated. My goal is to raise funds for the purchase of 400 pairs of shoes for the orphans and vulnerable children of Lesotho.

Will you prayerfully consider making a $20 donation for a new pair of shoes for the least of the least in Lesotho?

Winter in Lesotho

The Word of God Transcends Culture

I’ve been teaching the Bible for 19 years. I’ve always told classes here in the states that the Word is sufficient. That claim was challenged 2 years ago when I arrived in Lesotho, Southern Africa. I’ve never had cross-cultural experience and had never been in a 3rd world country. The first day I had 7 hours of teaching. My biggest concern was that after 5 minutes that I’d lose my audience and have a long 7 hours to fill.

But, it was amazing! The Spirit of God took the Word of God and imprinted it upon their hearts and minds. The interaction was lively and the Word was alive in the room.

I was not aware of what was going on in the background of the church but there was extreme division. The elders listening to my teaching took the Word to heart and implemented discipline and reconciliation within the next few days. God was magnified and glorified. We have returned to work with the Lesotho people 3 additional times in the last 2 1/2 years. God is at work in an amazing way! God’s Word is more than sufficient here in the US or in Africa!

I would love to go to Israel to see the land that Jesus walked. I believe it would significantly help my Bible teaching. I use the NLT translation for my teaching.

Sharing the Word

We are praising God for the many opportunities that we had to share God’s Word in Lesotho. Some of the teaching times were more formal…others very informal…some were in English…others in Sesotho…some were to encourage the Christians…others were to share the Gospel with those who do not know Jesus…some were with the educated…others were with the uneducated. But, there was one common denominator, the Word of God which transcends time and cultures…and transforms lives!

It was a thrill for me to watch as the peoples’ faces came alive when they received Sesotho Bibles. Imagine reading Bible stories in your own language for the first time. Most of the recipients were women who promised to read the Bibles to their children and grandchildren.
